Scoring Explanation

Each team each night will be playing for a total of 5 points.

1 point (team A, low handicap) vs (team B, low handicap) net match play

1 point (team A, low handicap) vs (team B, low handicap) net stoke play

1 point (team A, high handicap) vs (team B, high handicap) net match play

1 point (team A, high handicap) vs (team B, high handicap) net stoke play

1 point (team A) vs (team B) net match play

1 point (team A, low handicap) vs (team B, low handicap) net match play

Each teams lowest handicap player playing that night will play head-to-head in net match play for 1 point. Net match play is a hole by hole competition with the point being awarded to the player winning the most holes on that particular night.

Example: * represents getting a stoke based on handicap.  If a player has a handicap higher than 9 he gets an extra stroke on the corresponding hardest holes (if he is an 11 handicap…he would get 2 strokes the 1 and 2 handicap holes and 1 stroke on handicap holes 3-9).

Since Jim is a 4 and Bob is a 2 – Jim gets 4 strokes and Bob gets 2.

In this example Jim wins the 1 point for match play

    • Hole 1- Jim wins (Jim is up 1)
    • Hole 2- Bob wins (they are even)
    • Hole 3- Bob wins (Bob is up 1)
    • Hole 4- Jim wins (they are even)
    • Hole 5- Bob wins (Bob is up 1)
    • Hole 6- They tie with a net 3 since Jim is getting a stroke and Bob isn’t (Bob is still up 1)
    • Hole 7- Jim wins (they are even)
    • Hole 8- They tie (they are still even)
    • Hole 9- Jim wins since he is getting a stroke and Bob isn’t (Jim finishes up 1 hole and thus wins the match play point)

1 point (team A, low handicap) vs (team B, low handicap) net stoke play

Each teams lowest handicap player playing that night will play head-to-head in net stroke play for 1 point.  Net stroke play point is simply awarded to the player shooting the lowest net score (gross score minus your handicap = net score).

In the above ’Jim and Bob’ example, Bob would win the net stoke play point

  • Jim shot a 45, minus his 4 handicap to give him a net score of 41
  • Bob shot a 40, minus his 2 handicap to give him a net score of 38

The provided example shows how easily one player can win the net match play and the other player win the net stroke play.

1 point (team A, high handicap) vs (team B, high handicap) net match play

Each teams highest handicap player playing that night will play head-to-head in net match play for 1 point.  Net match play is a hole by hole competition with the point being awarded to the player winning the most holes on that particular night. (see above example)

1 point (team A, high handicap) vs (team B, high handicap) net stoke play

Each teams highest handicap player playing that night will play head-to-head in net stroke play for 1 point. Net stroke play point is simply awarded to the player shooting the lowest net score (gross score minus your handicap = net score).

1 point (team A) vs (team B) net match play

This is team net match play for the point. Each team takes their lowest net score on each hole head to head.  The team winning the most holes wins the team match play point.

Example: * represents getting a stoke based on handicap

  • In this example Team A wins the 1 point for team match play
    • Hole 1- Jim’s 4 is low (A is up 1)
    • Hole 2- Bob has a net 2 (the match is tied)
    • Hole 3- John, Bob, and Bill all have net 4 so they tie the hole (the match is still tied)
    • Hole 4- John’s net 4 is low (A is back up 1)
    • Hole 5- Bob’s 3 is low (the match is even)
    • Hole 6- Jim and Bob have net 3’s so they tie the hole (the match is still even)
    • Hole 7- John’s net 2 is low (A is up 1)
    • Hole 8- Bill has a net 3 since he is getting two strokes (the match is even)
    • Hole 9- John’s net 4 is low (A is up 1 and wins the match)

So for the evening Team A wins 4 points and Team B wins 1 point

  • Jim beat Bob in match play to win 1 point for Team A
  • Bob beat Jim in medal (stroke) play to win 1 point for Team B
  • John beat Bill in match play to win 1 point for Team A
  • John also beat Bill in medal (stroke) play to win 1 point for Team A
  • Jim and John beat Bob and Bill in the team match play for 1 point

***In the event that the two players playing for the same team have the same handicap…it is up to that team to decide who plays the low and high handicaps of the other team.  It must be decide and announced prior to their team teeing off for the match.

If it isn’t decided prior…it must then be decided by the toss of a coin.
